Helping a Mom with a Newborn

Many new mothers are depleted, overwhelmed, and lonely by the end of the day, especially during the newborn phase. However, family, friends, and other members of the community can help. In this article, we tell you how you can be of help to a new mom.

Organize a Supply of Meals

The best you can do for a new mom is organizing a meal train. Step up to the plate and do it.  Create a calendar where other members of the community can pick a date to send her a meal.

Take Care of Her Grocery List

Call the new mom and offer to do her shopping for her. Go to her house and pick up that grocery list. Friends and family members can also take turns doing this. Get her some easy-to-prepare meals so that she can eat well and have enough energy to breastfeed and nurse the baby.

Volunteer for House Chores

Volunteer as a community to come to the new mom and do some specific chores around the house. Even individuals can come around and help with chores like loading or unloading the dishwasher, vacuuming, or washing and folding the laundry. Anything at all. She would appreciate it.

Babysit the Older Children or Child

If she isn’t a first-time mom, then offer to babysit the older child or children. Take them to your house or the community center or recreational parks. The new baby deserves all the attention at this point.

Ask to Hold the Baby

Some new mothers might start practicing the ferber method when they get overwhelmed with babies’ cries. Do the needful as a friend and help carry the baby for a while. She might not show it, but she will be thrilled for the respite that you have given her no matter how short.

The community can do so much for a new mom. These are just a few.
